The American Wild Horse Campaign (AWHC) is the nation's leading
conservation organization preserving freedom and habitat for the
iconic wild horses and burros of the American West. A growing
organization with a $3.4 million budget and 100% Charity Navigator
rating, we are raising the standard for wild horse and burro
protection with the world's largest humane population management
program, a land trust that is acquiring and restoring habitats, a
dynamic awareness campaign that is empowering and expanding a
strong grassroots advocacy base, and a policy program that is
strengthening legal protections through legislation, litigation and
investigations. AWHC is headquartered in Davis, California, with
staff in other key western states, and the Washington, DC
metropolitan area. - POSITION SUMMARY AWHC seeks an innovative,
experienced and dedicated Development Director who is passionate
about animal/wildlife/equine protection to lead our fundraising
efforts. The successful candidate will have development experience
and a track record of strong leadership and managerial skills.
Reporting to the Executive Director and serving as a senior member
of the leadership team, the Development Director will plan and
implement a comprehensive major giving program to steward and
cultivate current supporters and expand our donor base. The
director will also be responsible for developing a corporate giving
program and growing the base of institutional support, overseeing
our grants program, and collaborating with the communications team
on our robust digital fundraising program. The director will
coordinate closely with the marketing/communications, policy, and
field conservation teams to ensure that fundraising efforts are
aligned with program priorities. - This position is a full time
primarily remote position. Since AWHC's work and donor base is
largely in the West, strong preference will be given to candidates
located within, or willing to relocate to, the Pacific Time Zone,
especially California (Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area or
Sacramento area) locations. - SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES - Strategic
Leadership
- Create and implement a multi-year comprehensive fundraising and
engagement plan to expand financial contributions to AWHC and
create a diverse and sustainable income base through major donors,
family foundations and donor-advised funds, planned giving, grants,
corporate sponsorships, and other contributed revenue sources.
- Partner with the ED and the Board of Directors Marketing
Development Committee to encourage and oversee board engagement in
fundraising, including support of Board members in outreach and
solicitation.
- Foster a donor-centric culture aligned and integrated with the
organization's mission and values.
- Ensure that AWHC fundraising activities adhere to development
best practices, including staying abreast of the latest fundraising
and philanthropy trends.
- Represent AWHC at donor meetings, events, and speaking
engagements.
- Implement a structured program for fostering strong
relationships with targeted individual and institutional donor
constituencies, involving the ED, board members, and other staff as
appropriate.
- Design and implement clear standards for donor targeting, moves
management, stewardship, and recognition.
- Build a pipeline of new prospects, ensuring prospects are
properly researched and a strategy for re-engaging lapsed
donors.
- Personally drive fundraising results through direct
solicitations, meetings and by supporting direct solicitations by
the ED, board and leadership team. -
- Create and implement planned giving and corporate partnership
programs.
- Collaborate with the communications team on strategy and
execution of the digital fundraising program. -
- Oversee grants program, including grant writer.
- Participate in developing the strategy for and organizing
fundraising events.
- Identify, recruit and train fundraising volunteers as needed.
Management
- Lead and manage the planning and execution of fundraising
events, including galas, auctions, and donor appreciation
events.
- Build a development team as the budget allows and manage its
members.
- Establish metrics and accountability to measure and ensure
progress toward development priorities and goals. -
- Work with ED and Deputy Director to develop an annual
fundraising budget. -
- Be an active participant in the AWHC leadership team, attending
twice-monthly meetings and engaging in other decision-making
activities. - QUALIFICATIONS - The ideal candidate will have: -
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college and
6+ years of related experience.
- Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) certification will be
preferred.
- Experience using EveryAction or equivalent CRMs.
- Demonstrated experience working with a nonprofit board of
directors and in nonprofit management.
- Experience in managing budgets to achieve measurable income and
performance goals.
- Knowledge and hands-on experience building donor acquisition
and retention programs from concept to delivery including
multi-year fundraising campaigns.
- Excellent communications skills (writing, speaking and
presentation).
- Experienced user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint),
Adobe Creative Suite, Google Suite, Slack, and Canva.
- Ability to conduct advanced research using internet
resources.
- Ability to travel, including multi-day trips throughout the
U.S. for donor meetings and events.
- Experience in non-profit advocacy work. -

The wage range for this position is $85,000 - $100,000 yearly. The
final salary offer will be determined after reviewing relevant
factors, including but not limited to skill sets; relevant
experience; internal equity; and other business and organizational
needs. TRAVEL Up to 50% travel within the US. Most travel will be
